JERUSALEM, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli government on Thursday slammed its Swiss counterpart for deciding to host a summit regarding the situation in the occupied territories in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement in response to the decision, saying it would boycott the event, which is set to draw sharp criticism over Israel's construction of settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, on lands occupied and annexed during the 1967 Mideast War.
"Israel views the Swiss government's decision to accede to Palestinian demands to convene a meeting of signatories to the Geneva Conventions very gravely," Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Emmanuel Nachshon said in the statement.
"Switzerland is helping the trend of politicization of the conventions. This is a political move whose only purpose is to exploit the important platform of the Convention to attack Israel," he said, adding the meeting is "politically biased."
The statement also said Israel would re-evaluate some of its joint diplomatic initiatives with Switzerland.
"In light of the Swiss government's biased approach over this meeting, Israel is currently reconsidering its position with regard to other Swiss initiatives relating to international humanitarian law," the statement read.
The summit of the Convention's signatories is scheduled for Dec. 17 in Geneva. Delegates from nearly 200 countries are expected to take part in it, whose activities involve evaluating new member states and learning more about the relevant issues at hand.
In April, as the peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel collapsed, Palestinian National Authority (PNA) President Mahmoud Abbas asked to join international conventions, including the Fourth Geneva Convention.
Established in 1949, the Convention aims to protect non-combat civilian populations in war zones and in occupied territories.
Israel is facing diplomatic challenges in defending its policies in the occupied Palestinian territories. The Danish parliament is reportedly debating a motion calling for the recognition of a Palestinian state, following the footsteps of Sweden, the British parliament, the Spanish parliament and the Irish parliament, to name a few, which have acknowledged a Palestinian state in mainly symbolic declarations.
Not only will Israel boycott the Swiss summit, according to a report by the Ha'aretz daily, but also the United States, Canada and Australia which have fought along Israel to keep it from occurring.
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will head to Rome and meet with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in order to coordinate a stance regarding another Palestinian diplomatic initiative in the United Nations.
The Israeli government has criticized the PNA for striving for "unilateral solutions" at international forums, following the collapse of the peace talks.
The PNA is trying to advance a proposal to declare a deadline to end the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Gaza Strip territories.
