A Hong Kong court has granted bail to the region's former leader Donald Tsang Yam-kuen on Monday, after Tsang was sentenced to 20 months in jail for misconduct in office, China Central Television (CCTV) reported.

Tsang, 72, had pleaded not guilty and was sentenced on February 22.

He was released on a HK$100,000 (US$13,000) bail.

The Hong Kong High Court went into session Monday afternoon, allowing Tsang to go on bail while the court hears his appeal against the misconduct conviction, CCTV reported.

No date has been set for his appeal, and the court said Tsang does not have to report to the police while on bail, according to local broadcaster RTHK.

Tsang, wearing his signature bowtie, was transferred to court from a hospital, where he had been taken from the city's Stanley Prison this month after complaining of breathing problems.

He thanked Correctional Services officers for being "fair" during his time in custody, saying his treatment proved that Hong Kong is a city that upholds the rule of law, RTHK reported.

Justice Andrew Chan of Hong Kong's High Court said he had set a starting point of 30 months in prison, but gave a discount of ten months because of Tsang's past good character and service to Hong Kong, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Tsang was found guilty on one charge of misconduct for failing to declare a conflict of interest when he approved applications for a radio broadcasting license by broadcasting company Wave Media, Xinhua reported.
